Contractor & DIY Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQs)

We offer several styles and materials of metal roofing for your Florida home, some of the most popular styles include:

  • Ribbed or crimp metal roofing styles offer exceptional life, durability, appearance, and performance with greater affordability. Panels are overlapped and fastened directly to the roof deck or framing through the face of the metal panel with gasketed screws. These styles are popular options because they offer faster and less expensive installation.
  • Standing seam metal roofing consists of vertical panels with raised seams that interlock to create a watertight barrier. This mechanically-seamed panel style installs with direct concealed (hidden) fasteners for cleaner aesthetics and longer life. There are 3 types of standing seam panels available, and panels that apply with a nail flange or a clip system.
  • Metal shingles replicate the look of traditional shingle roofing, but is made from more durable, lightweight metal materials that out-last and out-perform conventional shingles. While more costly than asphalt or wood shingles, the extended life of metal delivers the best long-term value.
  • Metal tile roofing is made to look like traditional Spanish clay tiles, but are much lighter in weight, easier and less costly to install, and offer outstanding durability. This style is available in unique colors and finishes and built to withstand high winds, heavy rain, and extreme temperatures.

The panel width will depend on the panel profile. They range from 12 inches to 3 feet wide.

Yes, you will want to place closures, either vented or solid under the ridge to ensure a weather tight installation. This helps prevent leaks and any damage that might occur on an open ridge.

A hip roof has slopes all around the house coming to a point. A gable has two slopes that go up and the other sides would be vertical. You could think of a hip roof like a pyramid, sloping on all sides, and a gable roof like an A-frame house sloping on only two sides.

Yes, in many projects metal panels can be installed over existing shingles, making your project go faster and providing an extra layer of protection. The Florida Product Approval Code ensures and allows for installation on top of up to one layer of shingles, but it’s important to check with local building codes before moving forward. The benefits of installing metal over shingles include reduced time and cost because of elimination of shingle tear-off and disposal, and less tear-off mess.

Once the metal roofing is fastened down, the panels will not be damaged in any way.

Galvalume is 55% Al-Zn (Aluminum-Zinc) coated sheet steel that is ideally suited for most types of roofing applications in Florida. An estimated 40 billion square feet of galvalume now cover buildings in all kinds of climates and environments throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as Europe, Asia and Australia. Galvalume is an ideal material for roofing because of its extraordinary outdoor corrosion resistance and resulting long life. It is extremely popular due to its versatility, ease of use, aesthetics and long-term performances.

For applications on or very near the coastline, a saltwater environment, or any brackish (salt and freshwater mixed together) water, an aluminum roof system is widely recommended. Aluminum is more resistant to corrosion and rusting from saltwater than galvalume or steel. The use of galvalume or steel roofing materials in these environments may void the product warranty. At 1st Coast, we can guide you to the best material for the location of your project.

Having the trim hemmed gives the pieces a more finished and sleek look, but more importantly, it assures that the edges are being protected from the environment.

Our standard trim is used industry wide. Our premium trim has a larger face and has hems along the edges. The premium trim is more aesthetically appealing.

Our trim comes in stock length of 10’ 3”. The 3” is to account for your overlap. The industry standard is only 10’ even, but this means you generally have to order extra pieces to compensate for the necessary overlap.

We keep many trim items pre-made in stock, but we suggest discussing your needs with one of our sales staff and ordering all materials in advance to ensure that you receive exactly what you need for your specific project.

During a routine delivery, the driver will accommodate any reasonable requests. We have a Moffet delivery system available to place materials in a convenient location for you. Unlike many of our competitors, the Moffett service comes at no additional handling cost (other than your delivery fee).

At 1st Coast Metal Roofing Supply, you have a choice between SMP (silicone-modified polyester) or PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) paint, also known as Kynar. Our SMP metal coils are coated with Sherwin Williams WeatherXL which packs a chemically-tough formula that will protect your roof from the elements. Its proprietary resin creates a hard-wearing, no maintenance finish that exhibits remarkable color and gloss retention, superior chalk resistance and resistance to stains, abrasions and metal marking. As our standard paint system, we offer 18 colors for you to choose from and it comes with a 40 year warranty. This technologically advanced paint system has outstanding color consistency and is ideal for quality metal roofing at an affordable price.

Our PVDF / Kynar metal coils are coated with a high-performance paint formula from Valspar. This top-of-the-line paint provides superior chalk resistance and gloss retention. Kynar paints are gaining popularity in residential applications because of its longevity and performance against extreme Florida elements, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun, abrasions, and humidity. However, Kynar is softer than SMPs and polyesters, making it relatively easy to scratch during transport or installation, and it’s also a more expensive option than the more durable SMPs.
