Galvalume Metal Roof

In order to receive the longevity and desired performance from your new metal roof, it is critical that you properly seal your new roofing system. Learn more here about the importance of a weather tight installation of your metal roof in Florida. This involves a variety of installation components including closures, screws and caulking.

There are many things to take into consideration when installing a metal roof, including what materials your metal roof will be in contact with. One of the wonderful product lines that we carry is produced by Fabral. They have provided the following standards for materials that come into contact with your metal roofing material:

When treated lumber will be in direct contact with metal panels or flashings please note the following: Galvanized steel is compatible with the CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) pressure-treated lumber that was predominantly used before 2004, but not with the older Penta treated lumber or the new ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quartenary), CA (Copper Azole), or CBA (Copper Boron Azole). Stainless steel or other special treated fasteners should be used into these non-compatible pressure treated lumbers. Aluminum must be separated from contact with all treated wood since the soluble copper in the preservative is corrosive to aluminum. Likewise, dissimilar metals also require a protective barrier between them to prevent galvanic corrosion.

You can read more from Fabral about installation instructions at the following link: Fabral’s Manual.

There are a variety of methods you can employ to ensure your metal panels are separated from treated wood and other dissimilar metals. The following can all be used to this end:

  • Plastic
  • Builder’s felt
  • Bituminous paint
  • Caulking
  • Gasket material

If you are installing aluminum panels that will be in contact directly with steel material, use any of the above separators. Then fasten the separator with stainless steel screws.

Avoiding Weather Penetration

By following the above listed manual’s instructions carefully, you can avoid penetration of your roof by the weather. This is critical to ensuring the longevity of your metal roof. If you do not install your metal roof weather tight, you will lose the wonderful benefits of your metal roof. In fact, all of the following will be hindered by poor installation methods:

  • Energy Efficiency
  • Lifespan
  • Protection for Your Interior
